NEBOSH FAQs

Anyone who wants to further their understanding of health and safety whilst improving their employability can study the NEBOSH National General Certificate! There are no restrictions. However, learners must be prepared to put in the study and revision time required to pass their NEBOSH Certificate assessments. 

The NEBOSH National General Certificate and NEBOSH International General Certificate are both versions of the NEBOSH General Certificate. The National General Certificate course is available in the UK only and the International General Certificate is available to all countries outside of the UK.

Both NEBOSH Certificates are the same safety qualification level, have the same units, elements and learning outcomes and they both follow the same exam structure and grading system.

The NEBOSH course content isn’t that much different either. They both teach you how to manage health and safety issues based on the “Plan-Do-Check-Act” management system. But each NEBOSH Certificate reference different legislation and regulation in the finer details. Find out more about the difference in versions here.

The NEBOSH National General Certificate course is an ideal place to start as it gives a broad grounding in the field of health and safety. The NEBOSH National Diploma course will build on knowledge gained at this health and safety qualification level. Whilst it is not mandatory to have a pre-qualification to take the NEBOSH National Diploma, it is very highly recommended you have either the NEBOSH General Certificate or at least 5 years health and safety work experience.
The NEBOSH Diploma is a Level 6 qualification which is equivalent to a UK degree with full honours. According to the National Qualifications Framework, completing the NEBOSH Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals equates to a full bachelor's degree.
The NEBOSH Diploma course is available in two versions. National for UK based learners and International for learners outside the UK. Both NEBOSH courses are equal to one another however the syllabus is slightly different and is tailored to health and safety legislation in different parts of the world.
As a NEBOSH National Diploma course learner, you have access to your personal learning portal containing:

The NEBOSH National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety qualification meets the academic requirements to apply for Graduate Membership (Grad IOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). It is the first step to becoming a Chartered Health and Safety Practitioner as a chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH).

The next step during the NEBOSH Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety course, is completing a Skills Development Portfolio. Once the Portfolio is completed, you will be asked to attend a peer review interview. Following the successful completion of all units of your NEBOSH Diploma, you will also need to maintain your continuing professional development (CPD).

IOSH FAQs

The IOSH Managing Safely is open to everyone and does not require any prior qualifications or prerequisites. While the course is aimed at those in managerial and supervisory positions, experience in these fields is not necessarily required to take the course.

The IOSH Managing Safely is a great foundation level course providing those in managerial positions with the knowledge they need to ensure their teams are working as safely as possible. This means applicants require no knowledge of health and safety prior to taking the course.

The benefits for taking the IOSH Managing Safely course are plentiful – ranging from a heightened awareness on how to improve Health and Safety measures generally, to developing greater leadership traits. This IOSH qualification will also support minimise the threat of accidents and illness, improve attendance records and reduce workplace injuries. A complete workforce is undoubtedly a more productive one, regardless of size or sector.

Crucially, IOSH Managing Safely is internationally recognised. Employees that successfully complete this IOSH Certificate demonstrate a company’s commitment to keeping its workforce safe and thus differentiates them from many competitors. Having IOSH Managing Safely certified staff contributes to companies fulfilling their legal responsibilities.

IOSH recommends completing the IOSH Managing Safely Refresher every 3 years. You will be able to refresh your understanding of the key areas of the IOSH Managing Safely, such as the Plan-Do-Check-Act model and how to effectively implement this model back into the workplace. You will also be able to build on your existing skills and capabilities.
There are no entry requirements to study the IOSH Working Safely course, meaning anyone, at any level, in any sector can take the course.

IEMA FAQs

For IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management, via classroom or virtual study, it takes 15 days, delivered as 3 split weeks.

The IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management course is assessed through three knowledge-based assignments, one after each course week. This means learners are assessed during the course rather than after it.

Learners must pass all three assignments to register for the IEMA Practitioner Membership (PIEMA) assessment. From there, learners take an Assessment of Competence-based on work experience.

Learners will receive their marks approximately sixty days after their submission.
The IEMA Foundation Certificate is assessed by a one hour multiple-choice online test. There are 30 questions, and you will need to answer 21 correctly (70%) to pass.
The IEMA Foundation Certificate is 5 days learning when taken either in the classroom or virtually. Online learning is approx 40 hours study.
