NEBOSH FAQs

As a NEBOSH learner you have your own login to a portal containing unique health & safety information, events for tailored Continuing Professional Development, networking opportunities a biannual journal exploring recent health and safety research. The NEBOSH National Diploma qualification meets the academic requirements to apply for Graduate Membership (Grad IOSH) of Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). It is the first step to becoming a Chartered Health and Safety Practitioner as a chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH). The next step is completing a Skills Development Portfolio. Once you have passed all of the units you will also need to maintain your continuing professional development (CPD). You will be asked to attend a peer review interview.
The NEBOSH Diploma course is available in two versions. National for UK based learners and International for learners outside the UK. Both courses are equal to one another however the syllabus is slightly different and is tailored to legislation in different parts of the world.
The NEBOSH Diploma is a level 6 qualification which is equivalent to a foundation level degree. According to the National Qualifications Framework, this equates to around 2/3 of a full bachelor's degree.

The NEBOSH National General Certificate and NEBOSH International General Certificate are both versions of the NEBOSH General Certificate. The National General Certificate couse is available in the UK only and the International General Certificate is available to all countries outside of the UK.

They’re the same level, have the same units, elements and learning outcomes and they both follow the same exam structure and grading system.

The course content isn’t that much different either. They both teach you how to manage health and safety based on the “Plan-Do-Check-Act” management system. But they reference different legislation and regulation in the finer details. Find out more about the difference in versions here.

Anyone who wants to further their understanding of health and safety whilst improving their employability can do so! There are no restrictions. However, learners must be prepared to put in the study and revision time required to pass their assessments.
The NEBOSH NGC course is an ideal place to start as it gives a broad grounding in the field of health and safety. The NEBOSH National Diploma course will build on knowledge gained at this level. Whilst it is not mandatory to have a pre-qualification to take the NEBOSH National Diploma, it is very highly recommended you have either the NEBOSH General Certificate or at least 5 years health and safety work experience.

IOSH FAQs

The IOSH Managing Safely is open to everyone and does not require any prior qualifications or prerequisites. While the course is aimed at those in managerial and supervisory positions, experience in these fields is not necessarily required to take the course.

The IOSH Managing Safely is a great foundation level course providing those in managerial positions with the knowledge they need to ensure their teams are working as safely as possible. This means applicants require no knowledge of health and safety prior to taking the course.

In your workplace, ensure that you put the concepts learned on the course into practice. Sign up to regular e-news, health, safety and environmental bulletins so that you are kept up to date on legislative and topical issues - see the Astutis Blog for useful updates. Plan your next course, the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety, which is an internationally recognised health and safety certificate.

The benefits are plentiful – ranging from a heightened awareness on how to improve health and safety measures generally to greater leadership traits.  Minimising the threat of accidents and illness will of course reap its' own rewards as attendance records improve and workplace injury is reduced. A complete workforce is undoubtedly a more productive one, regardless of size or sector.

Crucially, IOSH Managing Safely is internationally recognised. Employees that successfully complete this IOSH certificate demonstrate a company’s commitment to keeping its workforce safe and thus differentiates them from many competitors. Having IOSH Managing Safely certified staff contributes to companies fulfilling their legal responsibilities.

IOSH recommend a refresher every 3 years.  You will refresh your understanding of the key areas of the IOSH Managing Safely, such as the Plan-Do-Check-Act model, and how to effectively implement this back into the workplace.  You will also be able to build on your existing capabilities.
No, there are no entry requirements for this course.
