The course is designed for individuals who are looking to become designated first aiders within their workplace. It is the perfect qualification for employees working in medium to high-risk environments such as logistics, construction, and manufacturing.
As part of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, all UK employers must ensure that an adequate first aid provision is in place to protect their employees. Medium to high-risk workplaces typically require a qualified first aider, that holds a First Aid at Work (FAW) qualification. Whereas lower risk workplaces may meet their legal requirements with an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification.
The First Aid at Work course is a comprehensive 3-day workplace training programme that covers both theoretical and practical knowledge. The course is divided into five units:
- Principles of First Aid at Work – includes the roles and responsibilities of a workplace first aider, and understanding the importance of effective communication in emergencies.
- Life Support and Defibrillation – This unit covers adult CPR techniques and the safe use of a defibrillator.
- Management of Unresponsive Casualties and Medical Emergencies – this includes responses to shock, seizures, stroke, allergic reactions, and asthma.
- Injury Assessment and Treatment – covering burns and scalds, bone and joint injuries, as well as head and spinal injuries.
- Bleeding and Wound Care – Including managing both minor and severe bleeding and basic wound care methods.
The First Aid at Work course (FAW) is a 3-day qualification covering topics such as CPR, defibrillation, bleeding, burns, and medical emergencies. Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is a shorter, one-day course covering the essentials of first aid in the workplace. Both courses will ensure you are HSE compliant, but the First Aid at Work course provides a deeper level of training that is essential for medium to high-risk industries.
