Third of workers doing jobs they are not qualified for

November 2011

In today’s ever changing workplace it’s now more important than ever to keep up with the latest developments in your industry, as research shows that 50% of employee skills become outdated in 3 years1.

The global financial crisis has unfortunately meant that many peoples jobs have been put ‘at risk’ and employees are taking on responsibilities which didn’t traditionally fit into their role. In a recent survey, over one third of employees said that they are trying to do jobs they aren’t professionally trained for due to cutbacks in their organisation (Thirdforce).

87% people also stated that they prefer to learn at their own pace rather than in a classroom setting2; for many employees and employers online learning can be the perfect solution to this issue.

Online learning offers many benefits over traditional learning methods, such as reducing travel costs, saving time, increased learner control, being more environmentally friendly and encouraging quieter students to take a more active role in their learning.

Is online learning right for you? Use our checklist to find out!

One quick way to find out if e-learning is the right training method for you is to answer the below questions:

  1. Are you disciplined and well organized?
  2. Are you comfortable using the internet?
  3. Do you struggle to have the time to commute to classes?
  4. Would you like to control your own learning speed and content?
  5. Can you retain information well from reading, listening and watching?

If you answered yes to most or all of these questions then online learning could be the ideal training method for you.

Astutis offer industry recognised health and safety online training qualifications for the IOSH Managing Safely and IOSH Working Safely qualifications, with the online version of the NEBOSH General Certificate and NEBOSH International Certificate starting in 2012.

  • "Really interesting. Be warned though there is a lot of reading, thankfully you don't need to recall it word for word. I'd recommend having a basic level of health and safety understanding before undertaking the completely virtual course. The pre-exam webinars are helpful, and don't forget the *** principal."
