The IOSH Managing Occupational Health and Wellbeing course provides an understanding of the importance of health management within an organisation. The course also covers what wellbeing is and how this can add value to an organisation through the creation of a healthy workplace culture.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • State what health management is and explain why it makes good business sense to have a good health profile
  • Summarise occupational safety and health and employment requirements and describe what to consider in a health needs assessment
  • Describe how the vision and direction of an organisation influence health and wellbeing in the workplace
  • Relate health hazards to different categories and explain their causes and impact
  • Carry out a health risk assessment identifying the hazards, risks and controls and recognise any specific health risks that need to be prioritised
  • Explain ways to monitor health risks in a risk management process and state who can provide help with managing occupational health and wellbeing issues
  • List types of common non-work-related physical and mental health conditions and describe how they impact fitness for work
  • Describe the requirements and types of health assessments for specific worker groups
  • Describe the componenets of a drug and alcohol policy and testing process and explain how to manage results
  • Explain ways to conduct absence management and recognise the benefits of getting people back to work
  • Explain the aims and business benefits of a workplace wellbeing programme and how to promote and monitor it
  • Describe easy health choices and how they can enable a healthy lifestyle
  • Recognise mental health issues and explain how to approach the employee to find a way forward
  • Describe how the workplace culture and leaders' attitudes and behaviour influence overall wellbeing.

Section 1 - A healthy company

  • What health management is and why it makes good business sense to manage occupational health and wellbeing in the workplace

  • Occupational safety and health legal requirements
  • What a health needs assessment is and how it can help determine the level and types of health needs to be considered
  • The five steps in a health needs assessment

Section 2 - Health risk management

  • The five health hazard categories
  • Causes of health hazards in each category and their impact
  • Assessing the risk from health hazards
  • Ways to monitor health risks in a risk monitoring programme

Section 3 - Fitness for work

  • Types of non-work-related physical and mental health conditions and how they impact fitness for work
  • Types of health assessment to recognise standards and good practice
  • Drugs and alcohol
  • Managing the fluctuations of people's health status
  • Rehabilitation
  • Support services and case management

Section 4 - Wellbeing

  • Wellbeing
  • Easy health choices workers can make and how these choices can lead to a healthy lifestyle
  • Promoting positive mental health
  • Influences on overall wellbeing

Course assessment

Learners must complete a 30 minute multi-format exam consisting of 20 questions. They most also complete a workplace health risk assessment within 2 weeks of the end of the course, in order to pass. Upon successful completion of both elements an IOSH Certificate will be awarded.
