Sam McCloskey: Success Through the Astutis Method
Having a clear goal serves to keep anyone on the path they've laid out for themselves and their career. Sam McCloskey, Health & Safety Partner for Wienerberger, knew the courses provided by Astutis would allow him to reach his full potential - as Sam was looking to springboard his career and step into a leadership role. That's why he completed not one…not two…but three of our virtual learning courses.

"I did my NEBOSH General Certificate, and I recently did the NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction as well. So, I've had a full method of travel for NEBOSH. All the way through to the NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma. It's paid dividends moving through each of them, taking the information and just trying to build on it where possible."

Sam’s momentum reached its apex when he secured the NEBOSH Award for Best Candidate for Unit 3 after completing the NEBOSH Diploma. The NEBOSH Diploma is recognised by the industry for being an exceptionally thorough course that helps professionals develop an intuitive understanding of Health & Safety that can be taken straight into the workplace.
"First off, passing the Diploma was fantastic. Then being emailed to say that I've won one of the awards was just incredible. It makes all that hard work that's been put in worth it."
Sam is a case in point of what happens when you combine a commendable work ethic with the tried and tested Astutis method. Trusting in the process and applying yourself are sure fire ways to achieve success in the Diploma as well as special recognition. His advice for future and current learners echoed this sentiment.
"Don't give up. Don't take studying for granted; get down to the library and apply yourself. It's a lot of information to take in, but the way the course was delivered made it a lot easier for us to digest and take it away to revise a little bit more in our own time as well."
An excellent mindset for success on its own – Sam's discipline to apply himself is equally matched by his ambition to progress further in his career.
"I'm not yet at a management level, so that's the next progression and having this under my belt along with the award – it's a good little tick for those looking for new employees."
Even at the NEBOSH Graduation, he pursued opportunities to meet with his fellow graduates and learn about them to build those relationships. Collaboration with his peers during the NEBOSH Diploma was also vital to that progression – talking through ideas and theories with his co-learners and tutors.
"It's been fantastic to network. During the Diploma, working with or talking to the other candidates as part of the process of learning, we bounced ideas off each other, which was very helpful."
"It's a long time coming for all the graduates. For me, without the support of my wife and Astutis, I wouldn't have been able to get here."
