Is there funding available for IOSH Courses?

Find out more about the different opportunities to fund your IOSH course in the UK.

February 2019

Cost is a big factor that many people consider when choosing to partake in further professional study. One of the key points that people look at when making this decision is how they are going to fund their course. There are a couple of different ways that people tend to pay for their health and safety training.

IOSH and Corporate Funding Availability

Many companies have an internal training/learning and personal development scheme, which provides funding for employees to develop their relevant professional skills. The level of funding available can vary hugely from company to company. However, if there is a course you wish to take that you feel will add value to your current role, then it is worth discussing this with your line manager.

Some companies expect you to submit a business case with the costs and benefits of the IOSH course. Take a look at this post on why take an IOSH Managing Safely with a summary of the business benefits of this course. Even if you are not able to secure full funding for your course there may be partial funding options available. Alternatively, your company may be able to support you with paid time off or dedicated study time scheduled in to your working day.

Self Financing Your IOSH Journey

If you are not eligible for corporate funding and you are self-financing your IOSH course, there are very little finance options available. Some course providers may offer the opportunity to stagger your course fees over an agreed period of time so it's worth asking.

Funding Options Available with Astutis

1. Members of the Armed Forces

Armed Forces' members can get financial support for higher level learning. As Astutis is an approved and registered partner of Enhanced Learning Credits Administration Service (ELCAS) courses you can get funding to study with us.

2. Wales Residents

Welsh residents can gain acccess to a personal learning account (PLA). A Personal Learning Account will allow you to study part-time around your existing responsibilities. It will enable you to obtain the skills and qualifications you need to change your career or progress in your current job. Both the IOSH Managing Safely and IOSH Working Safely are available via the personal learning account.

Find out more by taking a look at our funding options.

3. ReAct funding in Wales

ReAct Wales provides training grants for people resident in Wales who have been made redundant or under notice of redundancy in the last 3 months. Under this scheme you can claim up to £1500 of funding for further training that will assist in getting back to work and extending your professional appeal.

There are a few restrictions on who is able to apply for funding but this is a scheme that is well suited to the IOSH suite of courses. To apply for the ReAct vocational training grant, visit Careers Wales website for more on ReAct.

Have You Considered Your Learning Method?

With the majority of IOSH courses offered by Astutis, you are able to choose how you learn with both online and classroom learning options available. If you are conscious of budget then choosing the learning method is worth lending some thought to.

Online courses tend to be substantially cheaper to sit than a traditional classroom course, largely due to the fact that overheads such as venue hire don’t apply. Therefore if you are working to a budget for your professional learning, many people find that online learning is their preferred method.

    Sarah

  • "Generally the course covers basic health and safety across many industries at a level which is both useful but not TOO in depth. I work in bio-sciences but understood the sections referring to construction well and found much of the course to be quite transferable. Speed of learning is good. Certain parts of the course (asbestos springs to mind) made questionable claims however the course allows this sort of thing to be flagged as feedback."
