Lynton Lythgoe’s Career-Defining Journey from Railways to Health and Safety Leadership

Lynton Lythgoe's path into health and safety began with curiosity and a desire for change. Working night shifts on the railways in his thirties, he heard about NEBOSH and saw an opportunity to build a career he could develop and grow in. What started with a quick Google search at home after a night shift turned into a three-and-a-half-year journey that transformed his professional life, and Astutis was there every step of the way.

"My journey with Astutis started a long time ago. I was in the railways, working on the tools, as we call it," Lynton explains. "I heard about NEBOSH, and that kind of piqued my attention. I was in my thirties and wanted a career that I could kind of develop and grow."

With a passion for the construction industry and a determination to succeed, Lynton took the plunge. 

"I loved the construction industry, as it were. That's my bread and butter. And when I heard about NEBOSH, I arrived home from a night shift, started researching, found Astutis and within a week I was booked onto my NEBOSH General Certificate. Three and a half years later, here I am, graduating with my Diploma, and Astutis has been a massive part of my journey."

The impact of the NEBOSH Diploma on Lynton's career has been significant. Coming from a railway-specific background, the course broadened his understanding of construction health and safety, and opened new doors.

"I think the biggest takeaway from the course was the information shared, because obviously, I'm railway specific, that is my background. So, for some of the construction elements, it was a real eye-opener," he says.

Within just three months of completing his Diploma, Lynton was promoted to Senior Health and Safety Partner, a testament to the value of his qualification and the confidence he gained through his studies.

"Within three months of completing the course, I was made a Senior Health and Safety Partner. I think the thing that's helped me most is my confidence and belief in myself and in the ability I actually have to retain the knowledge. And, you know, I have faith in myself."
