About Puma Energy
Puma Energy is a global energy company committed to providing energy access to enable socio-economic growth. Operating across Africa, the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific, Puma Energy delivers fuel, lubricants, bitumen, LPG, and renewable energy solutions to communities and businesses worldwide.
Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) sits at the heart of the organisation, with Puma Energy’s HSSE framework built around four key pillars: leadership, people and capability, risk management, and governance.
For Puma Energy’s Africa region, Astutis supported the development of a bespoke HSSE leadership workshop designed to strengthen frontline leadership capability and support consistent delivery across multiple African markets. The partnership was grounded in a shared belief that effective HSSE performance starts with equipping frontline leaders with the skills and behaviours to make a real difference on the ground
The Challenge
Following a company-wide HSSE cultural maturity assessment, Puma Energy identified an opportunity to further strengthen HSSE leadership skills and behaviours among frontline managers.
Puma Energy already had well-established systems and processes in place. The opportunity was to build on these foundations by providing supervisors and frontline leaders across the Africa region with a practical, people focused workshop to reinforce expected behaviours and help embed a consistent HSSE leadership approach on the ground.
The main objectives for the Africa regional programme were to enable supervisors to act as role models who combine technical knowledge with people-centred leadership, equip frontline leaders with practical, behaviour driven safety leadership skills, and improve understanding of HSSE expectations, safety culture and Puma Energy’s “Golden Rules.”
The Solution
Astutis was engaged to support the scoping and development of a bespoke HSSE leadership workshop for Puma Energy’s Africa region. Working in close collaboration with Puma Energy’s HSSE and Learning & Development leadership, Astutis designed a detailed workshop programme covering four core topics:
- Why HSSE is a guiding principle for Puma Energy.
- The role of the front-line manager in HSSE,
- Human factors.
- HSSE leadership in action.
The workshop was designed to be highly interactive, building practical skills through scenario-based activities rather than relying on traditional classroom delivery. All content and exercises were aligned to Puma Energy’s internal policies, objectives and operating environments, including branded training resources and exercises drawn from real Puma Energy HSSE case studies.
Piloting and Refinement
Before wider rollout across the Africa region, the workshop was piloted with a selection of Puma Energy’s Africa leadership team. This pilot tested both the content and format, and provided an opportunity to gather input from a range of operational stakeholders.
Feedback from the pilot was used to refine the programme, ensuring it resonated with the realities of the frontline operating environment and met the expectations of Puma Energy’s leadership.
Scalable Delivery Through Train the Trainer
To support a scalable rollout of the workshop programme across Puma Energy’s Africa region, Astutis delivered a series of train-the-trainer courses at Puma Energy’s offices in South Africa, Ghana and Tanzania.
Puma Energy’s internal trainers were coached to deliver the workshop to a consistently high standard, strengthening the capability within the company’s own teams and enabling ongoing, self-sufficient delivery across multiple locations.
Key Outcomes
“Took me back to training effectiveness basics which are the very foundation of efficiently conveying such sensitive and paramount information such as the session. Much emphasis was placed on how to really equip delegates in promoting a better health and safety culture within the organization. Overall, I see myself in a better position to support our teams and organization as a whole.”
- Jean Bakala
"This Course reinforced that safe behaviour starts with leadership and daily choice."
