When Lindsay Trevor began exploring her career path in health and safety, she wanted more than a qualification to put on her CV. She was looking for a training provider that would genuinely support her growth and give her the tools to thrive in a demanding industry. Today, as Health and Safety Manager at Danone, Lindsay reflects on her decision to study with Astutis as one of the most influential steps in her professional journey.
For Lindsay, choosing the right provider was just as important as choosing the right course. She remembers the difference she felt when she came across Astutis.
“Astutis was the one company that really stood out when I was searching because it made me feel like they actually cared about me as a person, and they wanted me to pass for me. I felt I wasn’t just another number or statistic; the experience I had on the NEBOSH General Certificate really has changed my life. It’s gotten me to where I am, and it continues to help me grow. The support I felt even after passing the course was just incredible.”
Once enrolled, Lindsay quickly realised the NEBOSH General Certificate provided her with a framework she could apply directly in her day-to-day role. The library of content gave her confidence that she could face almost any health and safety challenge, whether immediately relevant or not.
“The course gives you such a wide range of skills and knowledge, and you get an overview of everything. Asbestos might not be something you’re dealing with right now, but it gives you enough information to deal with it when it might come up in future. It also teaches you where to go if you’re unsure about what to do.”
One of the elements Lindsay found particularly valuable was the focus on legislation. Many practitioners understand compliance as a necessity in their own words, but Astutis helped her uncover the “why” behind the law so she could take that information into a boardroom setting.
“One of the overarching features I really enjoyed was the legislation, because we all know we have to comply with the law. However, you might not necessarily understand why. The course gives you the actual legal ramifications of what happens if we don’t follow the guidance. I really wanted to understand that background knowledge, and I can now sit in front of our board and explain the full picture of health and safety in the workplace.”
That ability to communicate complex ideas in simple, relatable terms has been vital in her role at Danone.
“I need to be able to communicate it in a way that is understandable for people who haven’t got any prior experience with health and safety. The NEBOSH General Certificate really influenced how I teach others about it.”
The Virtual learning format also played a huge role in Lindsay’s success. As someone with dyslexia, she needed a method that combined flexibility with interactive support to best assimilate the information.
“The virtual format meant I had a tutor, and we also got to split off into groups with other professionals. It was so useful getting to see other people’s opinions. It really opened my eyes to whether I was in another industry or environment; my answer might be slightly different. You really get to understand health and safety in every kind of aspect.”
On a personal level, the virtual option made training more accessible without compromising on the quality that is a hallmark of the Astutis approach to health and safety training.
“Virtual was also ideal from a personal perspective. It gives you an opportunity to go on the course without having to go and find a hotel or spend money on travel and food. You can have an in-person experience but also ensure that your home life continues without putting a stop on things.”
Since completing the NEBOSH General Certificate, Lindsay has gone on to broaden her skills even further. She has already completed Astutis’ Mental Health and Workplace Safety course and is now setting her sights on the NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma.
“I’ve done your Astutis mental health course, which I could highly suggest to everyone, a very interesting course. The NEBOSH Diploma is also absolutely on my radar for the future. I haven’t had the time to be able to commit to it just yet, but it’s just a matter of time until I eventually sign up for the course with Astutis.”
For Lindsay, the experience has been transformative, not only shaping her career but also giving her the knowledge and confidence to influence others. Her journey is proof of how the right training, with the right support, can empower professionals to reach their full potential.
