Lance Higgon-Young NEBOSH National General Certificate
We are so proud Lance Higgon-Young, an Astutis learner, passed the NEBOSH General Certificate in flying colours. We asked Lance to sit down with us to discuss his decision to take the NEBOSH General Certificate, how it went and how it has affected his life after completing it.
Course
Lance is an instructor within the Rhondda Sea Cadets where he has been a member for over 13 years. He currently carries out the role of the Executive Officer, which also includes Health and Safety responsibilities such as carrying out risk assessments and ensuring the safety of all cadets and instructors within the unit or when completing outdoor activities.
Why the NEBOSH General Certificate?
Lance had been keen to develop his career for some time. He was able to secure a scholarship through the NEBOSH Charity Safety Group and sit the NEBOSH General Certificate with Astutis.
How was the Learning Experience?
Lance studied for his NEBOSH General Certificate at Astutis’ Cardiff venue. His tutor created an environment in which he was able to learn and develop his skills alongside many other Health and Safety professionals, discussing difficult topics and sharing experience from various fields which helped reinforce his learning from a practical point of view.
The comprehensive workload Lance received provided a good grounding for the self-study and examination aspect of the course. Having not sat an examination of this type for a number of years, the thought of two NEBOSH exams was quite daunting, however the guidance and preparation given by the course tutor paid off and Lance completed his examinations with confidence.
Benefits of Completing the NEBOSH General Certificate
Since sitting his NEBOSH General Certificate, Lance has been able to improve the Health and Safety within his organisation with the confidence to meet his Health and Safety responsibilities and challenge poor practice. One thing that has really stuck with him is the Managing for Health and Safety HSG65 ‘Plan-Do-Check-Act’ system, something which he has already implemented within his role.
Future Career Plans
Lance is keen to develop his career within the Health and Safety field further and is already looking into taking the NEBOSH Fire Safety and Risk Management Course.
“Fantastic course delivered to very high standard. I found Astutis to be very supportive from beginning to end and I received a very professional service that I would highly recommend.”
