IOSH Managing Safely

Company profile

Part of the Kepak group, Kepak Convenience Foods produce a range of delicious convenience food products for the Retail and Food Service markets in the UK, Ireland and Europe. With brands including Rustlers, Zugos Deli Café, Feasters, and Big Als, they are a key player in the ‘Hot Quick and Tasty’ category worth over £459 million. Their manufacturing site in Kirkham, Lancashire has over 400 employees and is operational 24 hours a day up to 7 days per week.

Kepak’s training objective

Committed to maintaining its excellent safety standards, Kepak understood the importance of their staff completing an accredited health and safety qualification relevant to the individual’s job and responsibilities. Being a fast paced manufacturing environment operational 24 hours a day, Kepak realised the flexible potential online learning could offer as opposed to the traditional classroom based training methods.

Solution

The widely recognised IOSH accredited health and safety qualifications were selected:

  • IOSH Managing Safely was suitable for staff with management responsibilities, such as Kepak’s Production Supervisors.
  • The shorter IOSH Working Safely course was suitable for junior Team Leaders, enabling them to realise the importance of health and safety early in their management career.

A flexible learning solution was essential for Kepak staff to fit around their work schedule. So online learning was the chosen medium for completing the course.

Concerns addressed

Another key factor was that many of the staff delegates didn’t have English as their first language so clear, easy to follow learning materials was paramount for a successful outcome. Concerns were raised about the effectiveness of online learning as a medium, however Kepak was reassured that Astutis’ highly interactive and enjoyable multimedia learning experience would enable their staff delegates to successfully learn new concepts in effective risk management and apply them confidently in the workplace. The progress checks in each module with automatic feedback ensure delegates understand the concepts covered.

Astutis’ IOSH Managing Safely and Working Safely online courses were the perfect solution to meet Kepak’s training requirements.

  • "Generally the course covers basic health and safety across many industries at a level which is both useful but not TOO in depth. I work in bio-sciences but understood the sections referring to construction well and found much of the course to be quite transferable. Speed of learning is good. Certain parts of the course (asbestos springs to mind) made questionable claims however the course allows this sort of thing to be flagged as feedback."
