How the NEBOSH Diploma Elevated Jason Kent's Career as a SHEQ Director
Learning Method
Course
When Jason Kent reflects on his ten-year career in health and safety, he remembers a pivotal moment when he knew it was time to take the next step. He had the NEBOSH General Certificate under his belt, real-world experience spanning from mining to nuclear industries, and a SHEQ Director title. What he needed was the qualification that would solidify his expertise and open doors at the highest levels of industry.
For Jason, timing was everything. He could have pursued the NEBOSH Diploma immediately after completing his General Certificate, but he made a deliberate choice to gain substantial field experience first.
"I've been in health and safety for ten years, so I've got a lot of experience in the industry. I did my NEBOSH General Certificate, and I could have done the NEBOSH Diploma probably straight after that, but I decided to go out and get the experience I needed first. I started in the mining industry, and then I moved across to the nuclear industry. I had become a SHEQ Director, and I was at the stage of my career where I was ready to make the decision and take the Diploma."
The reputation of NEBOSH and Astutis played a significant role in Jason's decision. In an industry where credentials matter, he knew that combining the gold standard qualification with his years of practical experience would position him perfectly for future opportunities.
"Obviously, everyone talks about NEBOSH. They are the gold standard in the health and safety profession. Having that course behind me, combined with the experience, I just felt it put me in good standing for future opportunities."
What Jason discovered during the course exceeded his expectations. The practical elements were directly applicable to the complex challenges he faced daily in his director role. One aspect he found particularly valuable was the open-book exam format, which mirrored real-world professional practice.
"There were a lot of practical elements which you could take away from the course and apply to all the work that you do in real life. I think the exams being open-book is the best way to do it. You can actually look at the regulations; you can find them and refer to the places you need. That is how you're going to do it in the workplace. You know, you're not going to sit there and know everything. You're not a jack of all trades. And when someone comes up with you with a regulation, you're not going to be able to know it straight away. So actually having that ability to look through the regulations, understand the regulations, and then speak about them is really vital in that course."
The impact on his career was immediate and tangible. The Diploma validated his expertise, gave him new tools to communicate effectively at a board level, and expanded his professional responsibilities.
"I would even say that I've taken on a bit more responsibility within my role. We have contracts in Nuclear. We have eight stations we look after, and we're always looking for new work. New sites are being built, and thanks to my knowledge and qualifications, those sites will be put under my remit."
For Jason, the value of the Diploma extends far beyond personal advancement. He's witnessed firsthand how it can transform careers, seeing colleagues make the leap from general manager to director level after completing the course. The ability to engage with senior stakeholders and remove the traditional barriers around health and safety conversations has been transformative.
"I feel the course would absolutely give value to anyone who wants to get to a board level. At a director level, I think the NEBOSH Diploma gives you the ability to speak to key stakeholders about health and safety, professionalism and all the other stuff that comes with it. I've seen friends who made the jump from a general manager to a director title once they've completed the course, which is incredible."
"The Diploma gives you the ability to approach people, and you can remove the stigma most associated with health and safety when you talk to people. We're not here to stop work or interrupt your work and be a nuisance. We're here to make sure you go home safe at the end of each day, back to your loved ones. And that's the primary message for me, my team, and anyone in the health and safety world."
His experience with Astutis reinforced his decision to pursue the Diploma with the right training provider. The quality of instruction and the calibre of tutors made a lasting impression, contributing not just to his exam success but to his overall professional development.
"Astutis has a wealth of experience, and the way we were handled as students was brilliant. The tutors were incredible, they're great life teachers. A lot of experience, not just in the health and safety industry, but as barristers, military personnel and more. The experience with the other students was really good, not just for the course and the exams, but for life as well."
The impact of the course was so significant that Jason has become an advocate for the qualification within his own organisation, recommending it to peers and investing in his team's development through Astutis courses.
"I would absolutely recommend the NEBOSH Diploma to everyone. Any sort of health and safety professional looking to take the next step in their career, I feel the course is extremely valuable. I've already recommended it to my peers and my team. And I've actually put my team through courses with Astutis off the back of this course."
For Jason, the NEBOSH Diploma was a perfectly timed strategic move that elevated his career, expanded his influence, and equipped him with the knowledge and credibility to lead at the highest levels of the health and safety profession.
