National Older Workers Week 2024: Focusing on the Role of Health and Safety Professionals in Upskilling and Empowering Older Workers

As we approach National Older Workers Week, it’s an opportune time for Astutis to reflect on the contributions of older workers, the challenges they face, and the vital role of health and safety professionals in supporting them.

Starting on 25th November, this week aims to celebrate older workers while also raising awareness about their needs in the workplace. One key focus is the ongoing importance of upskilling for all workers—particularly older employees—to ensure they remain productive and safe in their roles.

The Growing Role of Older Workers in the Workforce

Older workers—typically defined as those aged 50 and above—represent a crucial segment of the workforce in many industries. In the UK and beyond, demographic changes, including an ageing population and a rising retirement age, mean that older workers are staying in employment longer. By 2025, it's expected that one in three people in the workforce will be over 50 years old. This shift brings new opportunities and challenges, particularly concerning health, safety, and workplace adaptability.

Older workers often bring experience and institutional knowledge to their roles. However, as they age, they may face physical, cognitive, and technological challenges that can impact their safety and efficiency in the workplace. Health and safety professionals must ensure that older workers are supported through health and safety regulations and by helping foster a culture of lifelong learning and skills development.

Ruth Williams, Age Community Champion at Astutis, part of Wilmington plc, said:

"Health and safety professionals are uniquely positioned to advocate for policies and practices that support older workers. Their role goes beyond compliance with laws and regulations—they are pivotal in creating a workplace culture that prioritises health, safety, and well-being at every age and stage of a worker’s career. For older employees, this can mean ensuring that they have the right tools, the appropriate working environment, and access to training opportunities that allow them to thrive.”

Enhancing Physical Safety, Cognitive Health, and Overall Well-being

As workers age, physical, cognitive, and mental health challenges can increase their vulnerability to accidents and stress. Health and safety professionals may support in adapting the workplace to help older workers, including ergonomic assessments to reduce strain, providing lighter tools, and implementing flexible work arrangements to minimise physical exertion.

Additionally, ensuring mental agility through transparent processes, regular skills training, and refresher courses is essential. A comprehensive well-being program should also address stress management, mental health support, and initiatives that promote physical exercise, social engagement, and mental stimulation, all of which contribute to a safer and healthier work environment for older employees.

Upskilling Older Workers: An Essential Part of Safety and Success

One of the most important aspects of supporting older workers is through continuous learning. As industries evolve and new technologies emerge, it’s essential that workers—regardless of age—keep pace with change. For older workers, this may involve learning new software, adapting to new work practices, or even shifting to different roles as their careers progress.

Health and safety professionals are critical in advocating for the ongoing training and upskilling of all workers, particularly older employees. The importance of training goes beyond just technical or operational skills—it’s essential for ensuring that older workers are well-versed in safety procedures, new technology, and any changes in workplace protocols.

Regular skills training can:

  • Promote Safety: Ensuring that all employees, including older workers, are familiar with the latest safety procedures reduces the likelihood of accidents and incidents.
  • Enhance Job Satisfaction: Providing learning and development opportunities boosts morale and engagement, helping workers feel more confident and capable in their roles.
  • Increase Retention Rates: Offering training and career development options is key to retaining older workers and reducing turnover.

Health and safety professionals can also provide specific safety training for older employees that addresses their unique challenges. For example, this may include training on ergonomic techniques, fall prevention, or safe lifting methods tailored to older workers' needs.

Creating an Inclusive and Supportive Environment

An inclusive workplace embraces diversity across all age groups and creates an environment where every worker can thrive. Health and safety professionals should advocate for inclusive policies that support older workers and foster a culture of respect and collaboration. This may involve:

  • Encouraging Mentorship: Older workers can be valuable mentors to younger employees, passing on their knowledge and experience while also learning from the newer generation.
  • Flexible Working Arrangements: Offering flexible hours, remote working, or part-time roles can help older workers continue to contribute meaningfully without sacrificing their health or well-being.
  • Inclusive Safety Practices: Safety practices should be designed to meet the needs of a diverse workforce, ensuring that younger and older employees can work together safely and efficiently.

In this year's celebration of older workers, let's recognise the immense value of their experience and contributions and renew our commitment to creating safe, inclusive, and supportive workplaces for workers of all ages. By upskilling workers—young and old alike—we ensure a workforce that is more adaptable, resilient, safer, and more engaged. Together, we can create a future where all workers can thrive, regardless of age.

*At Astutis, we believe in the power of experience. We are committed to supporting our older workers by fostering an inclusive environment where lifelong learning, safety, and well-being are at the heart of everything we do. By continuously upskilling our workforce and providing the tools and resources they need to succeed, we ensure that all our employees—no matter their age—can thrive and contribute to our shared success.
