From IEMA to ISEP: What the Name Change and Rebrand Means for You
We’d like to thank all our customers who’ve reached out with questions regarding the upcoming rebrand of IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment) to ISEP (The Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals).
IEMA, the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment, has served as the leading global professional body for environmental sustainability practitioners for over 25 years. With more than 22,000 members in 125 countries, they’ve long championed the sector. But as the sustainability profession has evolved, so too has IEMA’s remit.
Acknowledging that their original name no longer fully reflected the breadth of their work, IEMA engaged in a thorough consultation process involving surveys, focus groups, and workshops with members. The outcome? A proposed new name: The Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP). In December 2024, members voted overwhelmingly in favour of the change, paving the way for a rebrand that includes a refreshed logo and a modernised visual identity. This evolution better aligns with their expanded focus on sustainability skills and support for professionals across the green economy.
Naturally, changes like this bring up some important questions. While some details are still being confirmed, we’re in close contact with IEMA and will continue to provide updates as they become available.
When Will the Rebrand Be Made Public?
The ISEP brand will officially launch to the public on 17 July 2025.
Will This Affect My Post-Nominals (AIEMA, PIEMA, Etc.)?
Yes. Members will transition to new post-nominals aligned with the ISEP brand starting 17 July:
- AISEP – Associate
- PISEP – Practitioner
- MISEP – Full Member
These replace the former AIEMA, PIEMA, and MIEMA designations.
Are Training Course Titles Changing?
Yes, slightly. Course titles will be updated to reflect the new ISEP branding, though the content remains unchanged. If you complete a course now (prior to the public rebrand), your certificate will still be valid and eligible for the new title. For example:
- IEMA Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management (AIEMA) → ISEP Foundation Certificate in Sustainability & Environmental Management (AISEP)
- IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management (PIEMA) → ISEP Certificate in Sustainability & Environmental Management (PISEP)
Is My Existing IEMA Certificate Still Valid?
Yes. While there hasn’t been a formal statement, our conversations with IEMA confirm that all existing certificates issued under the IEMA name remain valid.
When Will New Certificates Display the ISEP Branding?
Certificates issued for courses completed on or after 8 January 2025—when IEMA legally changed its name to ISEP—will bear the ISEP branding.
Certificates for training completed before that date will retain the IEMA name, as ISEP was not yet a legal entity.
Didn’t the Name Change Already Happen in January?
Yes, the legal name change took effect on 8 January 2025, and ISEP has since been using the new name with partners, banks, and suppliers. However, the wider public rebrand rollout will officially take place on 17 July 2025.
Where Can I Find the Latest Updates?
At present, there is limited information on IEMA’s website. If you would like to further understand the decision, you can read IEMA's official rebrand statement on their website.
We’ll continue to monitor developments and share further details as they’re released. If you're interested in our library of IEMA courses, you can visit our course library below to read FAQs, try course demos and view the syllabus.
