Where is the NEBOSH General Certificate Recognised?

The NEBOSH General Certificate is recognised by employers and professional bodies around the world. Find out where the qualification will take you.

February 2019

This blog was updated in August 2023 to reflect the latest changes and updates to the NEBOSH General Certificate

NEBOSH (The National Examination Body in Occupational Safety and Health) is a leading global brand in health, safety and environmental qualifications. They work with organisations in over 132 countries to raise competence in health, safety and environmental management in all workplaces and help progress the health and safety profession. Their qualifications are highly respected by governments, professional bodies, employers and the global health and safety community.

To put it simply, they’re a big deal.

The NEBOSH General Certificate is their most popular level-3 qualification. It comes in two versions; National and International. The main difference between the two is the application of health and safety legislation.

The National version follows UK legislation and regulations, including the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992. The International version follows international best practice and standards, such as the International Labour Organisation (ILO), and incorporates local laws and cultures.

Both versions of the NEBOSH General Certificate are recognised around the world. Not only will it help you improve health and safety in your workplace, it’ll also open doors to job opportunities and professional memberships.

You can find out more about the difference between the national and international general certificate here.

The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)

Level: Associate Membership (AIOSH) and Technical Membership (TechIOSH)

IOSH is the world’s biggest professional health and safety membership organisation. As the voice of the profession, they guide the industry by setting codes of conduct, professional development standards and policies to help keep people safe and healthy in all areas of their work.

The NEBOSH General Certificate will entitle you to Associate Membership of IOSH. If you have 2 or more years’ experience working in health and safety, you’ll also be able to apply for Technical Membership (TechIOSH).

International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM)

Level: Associate Membership

The International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) is a professional body that offers recognition, information and support members around the world, in all areas of risk and safety management. It was established in 1975 to recognise individuals and advance professional standards in accident prevention and occupational health throughout the world. They currently have over 8000 members in over 70 countries.

The NEBOSH General Certificate meets the requirements for Associate Membership (MIIRSM).

South African Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (SAIOSH)

Level: Associate Membership

Saiosh is recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) as the professional body to register Occupational Health and Safety Practitioners in South Africa. They work to enhance and progress the OHS profession in South Africa through research, promotion, education, training, guidance and building relationships with other global networks.

The NEBOSH General Certificate will entitle you to Associate Membership of SAIOSH.

The Australian OHS Education Accreditation Board

The Australian OHS Education Accreditation Board was established in 2011 after they identified the need for generalist OHS professionals to be professionally certified. They review university-level OHS professional education programs and gives recognition for those programs that meet their criteria. The Board also engages with government agencies involved in OHS policy and regulation, the Higher Education sector, and supports recognition awards as an important part of promoting OHS education.

The NEBOSH General Certificate is recognised as being equivalent to an Australian Certificate IV in WHS – the first step in developing a health and safety career in Australia.

  • "The course was good overall. Online classes can be difficult and I much prefer the classroom experience but due to circumstances and availability online was the option chosen. FSC1 was very good with lots of interaction. But no forward planning or discussion was given to FSC2. Because of a lot of experience in the fire industry and risk assessments I carried on without giving the question enough scrutiny which meant a refer and a costly resit. 5 minutes of discussion and forward planning for FSC2 would have avoided that. All that said I’m aware I took it too lightly."
