In addition to the direct costs of sick pay and absence, employers can find themselves dealing with criminal prosecution, large fines, claims for compensation, adverse publicity and harm to both business reputation and profitability.

Courts can impose fines and imprisonment to both organisations and individuals who have been deemed to neglect their health and safety duties.

The vast majority of occupational injuries, incidents and ill health are avoidable with good health and safety management.  By saving money, improving productivity and raising workforce morale, effective health and safety management should be recognised as an integral part of any successful management strategy.
