No single person is solely responsible for health and safety, although employers hold the most responsibility. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 states that employers should conduct risk assessments in the workplace and implement safety policies and procedures. They should also provide necessary training for staff. Employees must maintain a safe workplace, ensure their own safety and that of others affected by their actions, and fully use the control measures that are put in place.
Ultimately, you have a moral duty to ensure your workers return home safe and healthy at the end of every working day. Research shows that workers are much happier and more productive in workplaces committed to health and safety. Reducing downtime caused by illness and accidents means less disruption - and saves your business money.
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 is the primary legislation covering occupational health and safety in Great Britain. It sets out the general duties of employers, employees and certain self-employed workers have towards themselves and others.
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is a discipline that monitors and manages different aspects of health and safety in the workplace. It encompasses rules and regulations implemented by employers and government agencies to protect employees against injury and ill health due to their work.
Your training journey is very important to us, and you should seek to choose a provider that respects your time, lifestyle and ambitions. In 2023, over 3000 organisations trusted us to deliver their health, safety and environmental training programs because of our approach to learning, which has led 98% of our learners to recommend us. We innovate, we tailor, and we optimise our courses down to the smallest detail, so you come away with everything you need to know about your chosen subject matter. We don't want you to just pass the course, we want you to excel as an individual and an organisation.
For smaller businesses with minor health and safety risks, the IOSH Managing Safely or Working Safely course is a great starting point. We recommend the NEBOSH General Certificate for medium-risk levels in small businesses and low-risk in large or multi-scale organisations. This qualification provides a solid foundation for occupational safety and health professionals. For high-level health and safety risks, whether in small-sized organisations, large sites or multi-site operations, the NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma is the quintessential qualification. This course ensures that students are extremely competent health and safety professionals and can confidently manage complex health, safety and environmental challenges intuitively.

Whether you decide to choose IOSH or NEBOSH qualifications, the key is to ensure that it aligns with your organisation's size and level of health and safety risk present.
