Principal Designer Course - CDM 2015 Principal Designer Training

Principal Designer Training Course

The Construction (Design & Management) Regulations (CDM) 2015, enforced in April 2015, have redefined the duties and legal responsibilities of the Principal Designer.

You can get an overview of the changes below or sign up to our in-depth CDM training course that covers the Principal Designer as well as the other roles in CDM 2015 to gain a full understanding.

Has the CDM Coordinator role been replaced by the Principal Designer under CDM 2015?

The Principal designer role does not completely replace the former CDM Coordinator role but it is in effect a newly designed function.

The Principal Designer is a new role, appointed by the client, that controls the pre-construction phase of the project. This role has the skills and knowledge to plan, manage and monitor the co-ordination including any design work of the pre-construction phase.

Some of the CDM Coordinator's responsibilities have been absorbed by Principal Designer. Other CDM Coordinator duties, however, have been redistributed to the Client and Principal Contractor. Because of this if you were looking for a CDM Coordinator course you now need to look for a course that covers all of the CDM 2015 roles and duties such as our CDM in Practice course.

Principal Designer's duties

The duties of the Principal Designer are easily integrated within the skills of an experienced designer or architect. Naturally they are subject to criminal law which means they are covered by legal principle 'so far as reasonably practicable'. Their duties include:

  • Ensuring designers comply with their duties and co-operate with each other
  • Reviewing health and safety information provided
  • Liaising with the principal contractor for the duration of their appointment
  • Preparing the health and safety file
