Where Will Your NEBOSH Course Take You?

01 February 2018

Joining a professional body is rightly important to many people considering taking a NEBOSH qualification. Not only do they support CPD and provide a range of resources and networking opportunities, they are also closely linked with career development. NEBOSH works closely with professional membership bodies around the world to ensure that their qualifications meet their membership requirements.

In this post we’ve detailed the most popular health and safety and environmental professional bodies and how NEBOSH courses can help you gain membership.

Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)

IOSH is the world’s biggest professional health and safety membership organisation in the world. As the voice of the profession, they set standards and support, develop and connect members with resources, guidance, events and training.

Holders of NEBOSH Certificate qualifications are entitled to Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). This category demonstrates that you have a clear understanding of health and safety and is ideal if you are looking to show potential employers that you take health and safety seriously. It is suited to a wide range of professions.

NEBOSH Certificate level qualifications also meet the academic requirements for Technical Membership (Tech IOSH) of IOSH. This category recognises both the knowledge and competence needed by professionals in a range of operational health and safety roles. To become a Technical member, you must have a suitable level of experience as well as an accredited qualification.

Holders of the NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety meet the requirements for Graduate Membership (Grad IOSH), and after completion of IOSH's Initial Professional Development Scheme; Chartered Membership (CMIOSH).

The International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM)

IIRSM is an independent charity providing practical support to everyone involved in managing risks to benefit people, society, governments and business. They are a collaborative and accessible professional body, led by its members.

Holders of NEBOSH Certificate level qualifications meet the academic requirements for Associate Membership (AIIRSM) of IIRSM. The NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is also accredited as meeting the academic requirements for Membership (MIIRSM), while the NEBOSH Diploma in Environmental Management meets the academic requirements for IIRSM Specialist Membership (SIIRSM).

Associate for Project Safety (APS)

The Associate for Project Safety (APS) is a professional membership body that offers guidance and support in all areas of construction health and safety risk management. Their members include professionals from architecture, engineering, health and safety, project management and surveying.

The National and International Certificates in Construction Health and Safety meet the requirements for Associate membership (AaPS) while holders of the NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety meet the requirements for Registered Construction Safety Practitioner (RMaPS) membership.

Institute of Fire Prevention Officers (IFPO)

The IFPO represents fire safety professionals across all sectors of employment including manufacturing, transport and the fire and rescue services.

The National and International Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management meet the qualification requirements for Technician membership (TIFPO) and Associate Membership (AMIFPO). Qualification holders with the relevant skills and experience may also apply to join the IFPO Fire Risk Assessors register.

Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM)

CIWEM is the leading international chartered professional body dedicated to the water and environment sector. They represent and support thousands of members and organisations in 89 countries. Their members work to improve water and environmental management, and the associated social and cultural issues, for the benefit of the public.

The NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management meets the requirements for Technician Membership (TechCIWEM) of the CIWEM. Those with Technician Membership have the opportunity to network with key professionals working within the industry and receive publications including the Environment Magazine and e-newsletters. The NEBOSH Diploma in Environmental Management also meets the qualification requirements for non-chartered Member (MCIWEM).

Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA)

IEMA is the largest professional body for environmental professionals across the world. Their membership structure aims to ensure that candidates are knowledgeable, competent and highly trained. In 2016/17 NEBOSH and IEMA announced a new partnership which means that two NEBOSH environmental qualifications are now accepted by IEMA to gain professional membership. The NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management meets the academic requirements for associate level of IEMA (AIEMA) whilst holders of the NEBOSH Diploma in Environmental Management will be able to apply for brand new Practitioner membership of IEMA (PIEMA).
