The IEMA syllabus covers the global and local environmental issues, as well as the impact of societal activities on the earth's natural systems. A practical approach is adopted to enable organisations to improve their environmental performance and reduce their impacts, both strategically and operationally.

Course breakdown

It is a 10 day course until 30 June 2017 (15 days from 1 July 2017 - find out more) assessed through a 2½ hour examination on the final day of the course.

The course is divided into 3 core themes and covers:

  • Environmental sustainability
  • Environmental legislation
  • Assessment, interpretation and management

What will I gain by achieving the IEMA Associate Certificate in Environmental Management?

2016 course

Delegates who have successfully completed the IEMA Associate Certificate in Environmental Management by 31 Decemeber 2016 are eligible to apply for Practitoner Membership of the Institute of Environmental Management (IEMA) allowing you to use PIEMA after your name.

2017 course

If you take the IEMA Associate Certificate between 1 January 2017 and 30 June 2017 you will need to take an assessment of competence before applying for Practitioner Membership of IEMA. Read more on the changes to the IEMA Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management course.

For classroom courses it takes 2 weeks including the exam.

How is the IEMA Associate Certificate assessed?

The IEMA Associate Certificate is assessed with a timed 2½ hour written exam that is completed online consisting of short answer questions.
